About this Website:
I the early 1990's, some of the cousins of my generation put forth a considerable amount of work researching and documenting a geneology tree from the mid-1700's through the 70's and 80's. From this beginning, nearly every living descendent (of Martin Francis Whalen ll branch) updated the families tree into the mid 90's. Copies of the finished document were distributed to everyone. Some were read and filed or tossed, some were probably put somewhere and eventually vaporized.
In the early 2000's there were a few sidebar conversations about storing them in hard copy, but no conclusion was made as to what format. Sometime between 2003 and 2008, I registered the domain name, www.whalentree.us with the idea of building a full blown interactive website where Whalens could add family pictures, events and other items. This site would have the 200 + geneology tree as the foundation of reference of the past and the platform to create a personal interchange. Someting that would closen the relationship of family members isolated from each other, coast to coast with the Midwest and Texas in between. The next few years were spent gathering data and media to be added.
During this same period of time, an incredible, overpowering phenomena took place ! "Social Media". In a few short years, many of the features that were destined in the website became available world-wide, not just for family members, but people everywhere to share. The Whalentree website could not compete with this venue nor was there any interest by family members to participate. So, for the past 5 years, I have used this domain on the web as a repository for many videos that I have created for myself and others. It has provided a convenient way to corroborate with co-produceres and clients in other locations. It has served a needed purpose.
A month ago I came across the lineage document, grabbed a cup of coffee and thumbed through some of the pages. I thought about dumping it, but I was also intimidated not to do so. I remembered the work of the many people who produded it and also believe it could be a great platform for someone now or in the future to add their own branches to. So I decided to redo the Whalen website using this key document and making it a new Whalen repository for our current generations to create a permanent history for future generations. Over the next few weeks I will be adding items to give you a feel for what this is about in hopes of creating interest and building a mini historical Whalen document. If anyone wants to contribute assets inclusive of events, pictures video etc it will be added. Most particularly, I would like to get memorial data on all our our generations parents and spouses. I have some that will be added on a regular basis, but I would like to document the lives of these great people.
I would add that in 3 weeks I will turn 76 years of age. I want to complete as much as possible while looking for a successor to take over the sit in the future.
